The Peloponnese is a region of Greece that offers a great vacation for nature lovers and nature watching enthusiasts. The region has a diverse and beautiful natural landscape, with mountains, forests, rivers, caves, and coasts. You can enjoy various outdoor activities, such as hiking, biking, rafting, kayaking, and caving, and admire the stunning views and scenery. The Peloponnese is also home to many parks and nature attractions, where you can observe the rich flora and fauna of the area.

You can visit Simos Beach, Lake Doxa, and the Polylimnio Waterfall, among others. You can also discover the history and culture of the region, and visit the ancient, medieval, and Byzantine sites that dot the peninsula. The Peloponnese is a place where you can experience the best of nature, culture, and adventure in one trip.

Some of the natural sights that you can visit are:

  • The Corinth Canal: This is a man-made canal that connects the Gulf of Corinth with the Saronic Gulf, separating the Peloponnese from the mainland. It is 6.4 km long, 21.4 m wide, and 8 m deep, and was completed in 1893. You can cross the canal by boat, car, or train, or admire it from the bridges above.

  • The Caves of Diros: These are subterranean caves that are filled with water and decorated with stalactites and stalagmites. You can take a boat tour through the caves and see the amazing formations and colours. The caves are also of archaeological interest, as they contain human and animal remains from the Neolithic period.

  • Voidokilia Beach: This is a stunning beach that has the shape of the Greek letter omega (Ω). It has fine white sand, turquoise water, and a natural lagoon behind it. It is also part of a protected area (Natura 2000) that hosts many birds and animals, such as flamingos, turtles, and rabbits.

  • Lake Doxa: This is an artificial lake that was created by a dam in the 1990s. It is surrounded by pine trees and mountains, and has a small island with a chapel in the middle. It is a popular spot for camping, hiking, biking, and fishing.

  • Vouraikos Gorge: This is a narrow gorge that was carved by the Vouraikos River. It is one of the most scenic places in the Peloponnese, with steep cliffs, lush vegetation, and waterfalls. You can explore the gorge by hiking, rafting, or taking the rack railway that runs along it.

The Peloponnese also has some unique animals, plants, and sights that are not found anywhere else, such as:

  • The Kastania Cave: This is a cave that has some of the most rare and complex formations in the world, such as discs, curtains, and helictites. It also has a variety of colours, from white to red to black. The cave is estimated to be 3 million years old and was discovered in 1980.

  • The Monemvasia Castle: This is a medieval fortress that is built on a rocky island that is connected to the mainland by a causeway. It was founded in the 6th century and was a strategic and commercial centre for centuries. It has many churches, mansions, and walls that preserve its history and charm.

  • The Elafonisos Island: This is a small island that is located off the coast of the Peloponnese, near the Laconian Gulf. It is famous for its sandy beaches, especially Simos Beach, which is considered one of the best in Greece. It also has a rich marine life, with dolphins, seals, and turtles.

  • The Petrified Forest: This is a forest that was fossilised by volcanic activity millions of years ago. It is located near the village of Agia Marina, in the Peloponnese. It has many petrified trees, plants, and animals that are preserved in stone. It is a rare and unique natural phenomenon.

  • The Mystras Archaeological Site: This is a Byzantine city that was founded in the 13th century and was the cultural and political centre of the Peloponnese until the 15th century. It has many monuments, such as palaces, churches, monasteries, and frescoes, that reflect its glory and influence.

Either by adventure, or leisurely exloration, you will undoubtedly enjoy the diverse landscape views, combining mountain and sea with culture, cuisine and history.
